VENICE SHIPS 1667-1797

Venice Had three rates of warships (1,2,3 : Primo,Secondo,Terzo), and frigates.
The Primo range carried c.62-80-guns, Secondo c.50-60-guns, and Terzo range c.40-54-guns.
The rates above was first c.1700, 1200, 800 tons in displacements, and early 1690s. it changed
to c.1750, 1400, 1000 tons.
The primo, and secondo range enlarged next in late 1710s been now c.1800, and 1500 tons.
In 1740s introduced new large primo range c.2000 tons (11-built between 1746-1797, which one in France.)
The secondo range enlarged to c.1850 tons in 1770s.(7-built to 1797, which two in France)
frigates size also grew to over 1000 tons in 1780s. (1100-1300 tons. four built between 1781-1795)
In 1797 five ships launched, and transferred to France (1x2200, 2x1850, 1x1300, and 1x1100 tons.)

Venice feet (piedi) was 347,73 mm (16 dita)
venetians use differents pound measurements (Libbre Sottili= 301,2 g, and Libbre pesanti = 477 g)
The Libbre sottili was used in ship gun zizes.

Armament until 1695 was same every ships: 20 libbre lower gundeck, 14 libbre upper deck,
and 12/9 libbre in Quarter deck.
From 1695-1710 the "Primo rango" was armed mainly 30 libbre in lower deck, but some ships had also
40 libbre , or few 50 libbres (five ships in spring 1698 was armed 4-50 libbre, and flagship "Rizzo d' Oro" at six).
The two others rango was armed as they were before.
From 1711 on the "Primo rango" was armed complety of 50 libbres in lower deck in flagship, and
40-libbre if private ship, upper deck were 30-libbres, and 12-14-libbres an quarter deck.
During the second Morean war (1714-1718) the new ships of "secondo rango" was armed 30-libbres in lower deck,
20-libbres in upper deck, and 9-12-libress for quarter deck.
